I have always been and always will be a bargain shopper. Like, hello, why would I pay full price for anything when sales exist? But seriously, I love the thrill of finding a good price just as much as I love saving money.
So behold, my five secret online shopping hacks.
1. COMPARISON SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP
Before checking out, I always type the item’s name into Google just to see if it’s available anywhere else for cheaper. I once saved $100 on a DVF dress because it was on sale at a different department store, plus they had an additional 25% off code. Can you say come to momma?
If it’s not a brand-name item, I head to Keep or Polyvore and type in a description instead (for example, palm tree print dress). It might not be the same exact item, but most of the time, I can find a more affordable alternative.
2. BREAK THE CODE
There’s a fantastic extension on Google Chrome called Honey. When I’m online shopping, it automatically finds applicable discount codes and applies them to my cart upon checkout. I also love that the icon glows when it detects a discount, much like my heart.
3. DON’T ACT A FOOL
Something that will really save you money in the long run—not falling for international scam shopping websites. Not only is the quality of the clothing usually terrible, but you’re also risking your finances and/or identity. Stick to trusted websites with secure checkouts, and your wallet will breathe easier. Good rule of thumb: If it’s too good to be true, then it’s too good to be true.
4. THINK INSIDE THE BOX
Hate online shopping or just don’t have the time? There’s a box for that! Plenty of subscription websites will curate your closet for you, saving you time and money.
Here are some good options:
- Unlimited by Rent the Runway – a little on the pricier side, but great if your life is full of events or if you love high-end clothing
- Le Tote – items are more on the casual side
- Stitch Fix – gets a lot of great reviews
- Rocksbox – for those who have jewelry commitment problems, like me
- Trunk Club – owned by Nordstrom
- Five Four Club – for my guy readers
5. GET RE-SALESY WITH IT
Every now and then I make an online purchase and a few months later realize I’m not getting any use out of it. That’s when I head to Poshmark and sell it for a fraction of the price. It’s always exciting to make a sale, and it’s a win-win for all parties involved. They get a new closet staple, and I get more cash to feed my online shopping addiction.
